SONG REVIEW - WAKE ME UP (AVICII)
Wake me up by the famous Swedish DJ, remixer and music producer Avicii was release on 17 June 2013 make the huge hit in the music industry. This song’s genres are Country music, House music, Folktronica and Dance/Electronic. Surprisingly the vocals on this song were not sang by Avicii but was sang by Aloe Blacc a 35 years old American soul singer. This song has made over 2.2 billion views on YouTube and it’s also Avicii’s most viewed song. Wake me up also has received 4 awards on 2014 and makes it the most popular song on that time. This song also makes Avicii popular among the people especially teenagers who are into electronic genre music. Avicii was 24 years old when he released this song and he’s 16 years old when he started learning to make music.
The story behind this song as Aloe Blacc who wrote the lyrics said that he was on the bus travelling back to Switzerland and he was thinking of himself that ‘My life is such a dream and wake me up when it’s all over” and wrote down the lyrics. Next thing he knows was all over the world singing it. Aloe Blacc made his collaboration with Grammy-nominated DJ Avicii and made the whole world singing with him. This song also was original complete one was an acoustic one and it’s remixed by Avicii into the famous dance/electronic song and that’s currently known by the world. The meaning behind the lyric was when we have reached our incredible heights in life is “such a dream” and someone should wake us up “when its all over”. The sudden realize of our unbelievably good life can bring us to this song’s lyric. The music videos also have a meaning behind it which is the two girls feeling insecure about how different they are from the people in their village.
In my opinion, this song has an interesting melody and electronic rhythm that produced by Avicii and makes me listen to it uncountable times. Aloe Blacc also have a beautiful vocal that attract me to memorized the lyrics so fast and made me sing thousand of times. I’m hoping to see more of Avicii’s songs but sadly he’s died on 20 April 2018 because of committing suicide. Although he’s not here anymore his music made a huge impact on music industry and “Wake me up” still remembered and played. Other artists also made tribute to Avicii’s death by playing his top music which is “Wake me up”. For example, the artists are OneRepublic, The Chainsmokers and even Aloe Blacc who sang most of Avicii’s electronic songs pays tribute to him. For me, “Wake me up” has made a trademark to Avicii and made him recognizable among the youngsters even they can’t see him alive.
