MOVIE REVIEW : TOP GUN MAVERICK 2020

Top Gun: Maverick is a 2022 American action drama film and a sequel to the 1986 film Top Gun. Tom Cruise returns as the naval aviator Maverick, and the film also features other returning actors from the original film. The plot involves Maverick training a group of younger Top Gun graduates, including the son of his deceased best friend, for a dangerous mission while confronting his past.

Paramount Pictures first announced plans for a Top Gun sequel in 2010 and brought back Cruise, producer Jerry Bruckheimer, and director Tony Scott to work on the project. However, after Scott's death in 2012, the project was put on hold. The film is dedicated to Scott's memory. Joseph Kosinski was later hired to direct, and production resumed in 2017. Principal photography took place in California, Washington, and Maryland from May 2018 to April 2019, using IMAX-certified 6K full-frame cameras. The film's release date was delayed multiple times due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the complexity of the action sequences. Despite several streaming companies attempting to purchase the film's streaming rights, Cruise insisted that the film be released exclusively in theatres.

United States Navy Captain Pete "Maverick" Mitchell is a test pilot more than 30 years after graduating from Top Gun. Despite his many accomplishments, repeated disobedience has kept him from flag rank; his friend and former Top Gun rival, Admiral Tom "Iceman" Kazansky, now commander of the United States Pacific Fleet, frequently protects Maverick. Rear Admiral Chester "Hammer" Cain intends to scrap Maverick's hypersonic "Darkstar" scramjet programme in order to fund drones. Maverick unilaterally changes the target speed for that day's test from Mach 9 to the final contract specification of Mach 10 to save the programme. However, the prototype is destroyed when he is unable to resist exceeding Mach 10. Iceman saves Maverick's career yet again by assigning him to Top Gun school at NAS North Island.
